News From Joy and Randy

We have cancelled the Wichita KS Show. I have lots of hand dyed scraps that I was saving for myself but have decided to sell.
These scraps are cut into approximately 1.5 inches and are 6 or 8 step gradations. A gallon zip lock bag as full as I can stuff is $20.00.

Well, it is hot and dry. We have had less than 5 inches of rain all year. My garden is trying to grow but sure is not producing like it did last year. I am not going to have the sunflowers or veggie to give away this year. I keep watering but my second and third planting of sunflowers came up and are about 6 inches tall and seems to have stopped growing. I was able to get one big batch of the first planting in jars ready to give away. I was able to give away lots of tomato and pepper plants that I started in February. I hope they are doing better than mine. I do not think the plants can set fruit when it is so hot.

We have just had our big winter weather rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. We are so thankful it only lasted a few days and we did not loose electricity or water this year. Last February is one we do not want to repeat.
We are getting show stuff ready. It will be great to be able to do a quilt show. We will be in South Padre Island February 18 & 19. This will be our last time to do this show. This will be our third year in South Padre Island. We love doing this show so we can eat at Pier 19. I love their bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwich. There is a lot of bacon and it hangs off the edge like an octopus legs. The Rio Grande Valley quilt show was the first one we did after we got the motor home. We did the show when it was in Pharr, TX and McAllen, TX.
I have started some garden seeds and plants but will wait until we get back to start tomatoes and peppers. We have added another bed and tilled up a new area for more sunflowers this year. I think I have about 500 seeds of sunflowers to plant! Here is a picture of some I gave away last year. The dahlias did OK but I did not dig up the tubers so they may not have survived. I may just treat them as annuals as I really do not have a place to store them. Also, going to try some dahlia seeds this year. I had a lot of poppies growing but one hard frost killed them, so I have sowed more seeds after the snow. Hope they are as pretty as the ones last year.

The website did not have a SSL Certificate so it keep coming up Unsecure. The website host company fixed that this week so if you have it book marked and not coming up correctly.
Reset the book mark so it displays as: https://www.joysfabrics.com
Also, Google had my business as being closed and I think I have fixed that, too.
The garden is about cleaned up. I still have peppers and tomatoes that will continue to make until frost. I have got to decide if I am going to dig the Dahlia tubers or just mulch. We have leveled the area for the greenhouse/hoop house. It is tentatively to be delivered and set up next week. I had a greenhouse in the 70s and 80s but this will be a lot different, I think. It will not have electricity and still discussing the heat. This is one of Leon Sloan's Greenhouses from Kingston, OK. I have watched all of his You Tube videos and started using his wicking tubs method for peppers and tomatoes. I have about 8 tubs of peppers and tomatoes that I will move into the house. I saved tubs of tomatoes last year in the shop and we had tomatoes until late December. I just pray we do not have February like we did this year.

I cannot believe it is August. The garden is about done but still have tomatoes and okra to pick today. I planted another bed of sunflowers and they are looking great. They should be in bloom the first week of September. Also, planted another bed of corn and a few plant of zucchini. I am starting to pull off marigold seeds and pulling up older plants but still a lot are blooming and looking great since they have been out in the beds since March.
The inventory on Two Fabric Bargello kits is low on a few colors. I have updated that page at: https://www.joysfabrics.com/patterns.html

It has been a very comfortable summer so far and the highs next week is only 95 degrees. I have had a great garden this year. We have made a total of 9 raised beds. I have flowers in 4 of them and vegetables in the others. The corn did not do very good as we had a heavy rain and wind. I set it back up and put hoops in various places to help but did not do good. I have tilled these beds and planted three 20 foot rows of corn and three 20 foot rows of Sunflowers. I have never grown this many sunflowers and really enjoy having them to give away in bouquets. We delivered six this week. We have given away a lot of cucumbers, squash, zucchini and tomatoes. We take a lot to church and Randy delivers to neighbors, post office and bank. I have another big batch that I picked yesterday and today that needs to find a new home today. I canned another 7 pints of tomato sauce today. I have made zucchini muffins, zucchini tots and zucchini brownies. Plus, froze a lot of tomatoes, zucchini and okra. I think the more I give away the more the garden produces. I told Randy today that I need to work on my water for the garden and he said, "You want to produce more!"

I finished another Two Fabric Bargello top last week and have decided to quilt it with a Bubble Pantograph this week. I took pictures of every step and working on a help page. I just need to download the pictures and finish writing details. I hope to have that done later in the week. It is made with the Effervescence Atmosphere and Gelato 11216-203 which is Fuschia to Turquoise. Here is a picture of the new sample and I have made kits, too.
