More of my first quilts made from my hand-dyed fabric.

"The Swirl Quilt"

The Swirl Quilt

The Swirl Quilt is a tie-dyed swirl design, which is the same technique that I use for my tie-dyed T-shirts. The quilt was made for my nephew, Matthew Faust, for his graduation gift. He cannot have it until it has been displayed in my booth at all of the quilt shows this year. I sewed the fabric together first to make one piece of fabric for the front and back. It was then formed into a swirl while the fabric was damp and secured with rubber bands. It looked like a big Frisbee when complete. The dye is then applied to it using squeeze bottles in pie shaped wedges with all of the different colors beginning with yellow, golden yellow, orange, etc. and ending with green. The bundle is then turned over and the other side is dyed in the same manner and colors. The fabric then is covered with plastic for 24 hours to allow the dye to cure. Then, the fun part is removing the rubber bands and seeing what design and colors I have made. The fabric is then rinsed and washed several times. The quilt was machine-quilted free hand by my friend, Fran Snay. The quilting design makes it look like a puzzle, which is the response from the people that have seen it this year.

"Godley Sunrise"

Godley Sunrise

Godley Sunrise was pieced from 1 1/2" strips of scraps of my hand-dyed fabrics. The inspiration for this quilt is the quilt on the back cover of Joen Wolfrom's book, The Visual Dance. This was hanging on my design wall for two years as I was trying to get the colors just right. I decided to just sew all of the strips together then over-dye, that way the colors would not look out of place if I messed up. I just begin to sew without much thought to the colors after I had done the black, golden yellow and red strips. My family convinced me not to over-dye the quilt, for which I am glad. I think that one of my problems is I over plan a quilt and that is why it takes forever for me to complete each one. This quilt was machine-quilted freehand by my friend, Fran Snay. This quilt will be on display in my booth at the quilt shows this year, but this one is mine!
